Box to Box Media's Roger Tames received a major honour at December's North East Sports Awards when more than thirty years of sports broadcasting was recognised with the award for Support to Sport.

Roger received the award at a prestigious ceremony held at Sunderland Aquatic Centre. The Ralph Hindle Memorial Award was presented to him by Marlene Cairns in memory of her late husband who was a much respected employee of Sport England.

The awards are the region's ultimate sporting acolades and have been running since 1992. As Head of Sport at Tyne Tees Television, Roger was one of the founder partners of the awards and for more than a decade hosted the evening himself.

It was only the third time the  Support to Sport award has been presented to an individual for their outstanding contribution. Past winners have included Northern Electric, Tyne & Wear Development Corporation, Durham CCC and Slaley Hall.

"I had absolutely no idea I had been nominated for an award till I was having a drink in the reception and someone told me it was in the programme," said Roger, who was put forward alongside Gateshead and Sunderland Councils.

" When I moved to the North East in Januray 1976, I only knew a couple of people, so it's a fantastic honour to be recognised by the region's sporting community."

Also among the honours on the night were Sunderland's Olympic bronze medallist Tony Jeffries who was NE Sports Personality of the Year, County Champions Durham CCC won the Team Award while their inspirational Geoff Cook was Coach of the Year and Steve Cram received the Jackie Milburn Award.
